B.A. Oberlin College, Ethnomusicology with a focus on West Africa & the Diaspora
Stephanie Rooker draws from a broad range of musical influences: from her years of classical and jazz training to her distinctive grasp of the cultural evolution of American gospel--blues--jazz --&--hip-hop, from the singer-songwriter folk of her native Appalachia to her immersion in traditional folk music of Ghana. Rooker has performed with the Riverside Inspirational Choir, Alvin Ailey (Revelations), and her own soul-jazz-funk band in NYC and beyond for the past 3 years. She has graced the stages of many high-profile venues, including NYC’s Blue Note, D.C.’s Blues Alley and the Jefferson Center in Roanoke, VA.
